View Full Version : Am I crazy?

Here's the deal:

I love riding my motorcycle, even though it's nothing special. Lately, I haven't been able to ride because its oil leak got worse and it started leaking raw fuel from the far left carb. Not really big issues, I just didn't want to mess with them in a hot as hell garage. I started looking into the oil leak the night before last and will probably get it finished up this weekend.

The bike is a 96 Honda Magna 750 that I paid $2300 for about a year or so ago. It's current value is around $2300 according to typical "value" sites but I know they go for much more right now because of fuel prices and it's riding season.

The bike:

Here's the other side of things:

I miss my first truck. I don't know if it was the simplicity of it all since vehicles were much more simple back then or maybe I'm just getting all sappy about how much fun I had in it. Either way, I want another square body S-10. The short term plans would be small mods and maybe paint. The long term would be an LS motor and an autocross setup (WAY down the line). I desperately want to find a nice square body now because they are getting more and more rare as time goes by.

My old '84:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj60/BMRbrnSNRbrd/Previous%20trucks/Truck2.jpg

Now, back when I had this thing I never worked on it myself, I didn't know jack about what to do to it, and I was always chasing what others had already done. I had it painted, had the motor replaced when it blew, had the trans replaced, ran two different sets of wheels and had (literally) three times the trucks value in the sound system.

What I'm getting at is that I'm thinking of either selling the bike or trying to trade it for a square body S10...am I crazy?

Here is one that I found with potential...ignore the paint and such and try to see it as a canvas for what I want to do...

Looks like a great truck to start with!

I think so too. I don't know that he is at all interested in a trade, but I honestly think if he emails me back and says yes, I'll be in Tulsa at some point this weekend. I just don't know if I'll be happier with a truck for a toy or miss the bike more.

That's a tough call! They would both be fun toys.

Bikes like that are a dime a dozen too, you can always find a good bike for 2 grand, but not so much on the clean s-10!

Well Sarah just got home...you won't believe this...she is adamently behind the trade! She liked Tim's point about how I'm attached to a square body S10 but not particularly this bike.

On the story of the green S10 I fear he has changed his mind. I haven't heard from him since about 3:30 when he promised more pics after work. I was all but set on heading up there tomorrow or Saturday. I really hope it's just a lapse in memory or something, but I doubt it. Damn.

Do you absolutely want a short bed or would you take a long bed? Cause I got a buddy who has a long bed S-15 with a badass 350.

My '84 was a long bed...I could do that. It would have to be hella straight though.

Well I'm back at square one right now...the bike has had all the plasti-dip removed, the carb leak was found and fixed (very simple), and...

I GOT A BITE ON THE BIKE!!!

A guy in Sapulpa wants to come down and look at it tomorrow. The bike developed a small oil leak, but I told him that I would lower the price to compensate for it (I know what the problem is, just can't get it fixed before tomorrow.)

Also, I found this...and it's far better than the green one...

That's, literally, exactly what I'm looking for.

Here's where I am: the bike developed a small (very small) fuel leak that I could not find in an easily seen spot. However it was very obvious because raw fuel smells so bad. I started looking into the typical places raw fuel would leak.

I took the carbs all apart thinking that it was the bowls. Replaced the bowl seals and bowl drain screws and put everything back together. I put a little fuel in the bike and ran it for about 10 minutes...nothing.

I then filled it up in anticipation of riding it the next day...and it started to leak. I felt determined to find the source so I started tearing the bike down immediately to find exactly where it was leaking...I found it was only the fuel line to the rear set of carbs...something I could have replaced without ever taking the carbs off..oh well.

Went yesterday morning to get some new fuel line and hose clamps. While installing them (with the carbs on the bike) I had to rotate the fuel tube on the rear two carbs. Got that installed and all excited...still leaking, but now from the ends of the fuel tube for the rear two carbs. I guess while rotating it, I caused another problem because the seals at the end of the fuel tube are 16 years old. Now I'm not going to touch that damn thing for a few days so that I dont' just push it over and set it ablaze with the fuel its leaking from the carbs.

I guess the only way to fix this problem is new fuel tube seals. I also found out you have to remove the carb bank and also separate those two rear carbs from the bank in order to change the seals. This is going to get interesting. Taking the carbs off isn't too hard, just time consuming. I really wish I could have sold it this weekend as I really want that black S10, but what can you do, right?

well thats shitty!

I'll all for the bonfire, take a vid of that shit? LOL

Well I tore down the bike again yesterday and spent a little time getting all the unreachable places cleaned up after I got done.

I decided that I would test the carbs before I start ordering parts. I'm going to go and buy a cheap petcock and a long piece of fuel line to rig up a way to put a lot of fuel pressure (for a carb setup...nothing like fuel injected pressure) on them and make sure I know where the leak is. I want to verify it isn't leaking elsewhere (like somewhere much easier to fix) and just running down and dripping everywhere since the bike has been leaning every time I have checked.

Get the bike running ASAP! Student loan checks are coming out in short order. I'd bet some student would love to have that as there easy to park very fuel efficient primary transportation. I'd bet you could get $2500+ for it right now. Wait much longer and the weather will start to turn and it will get harder and harder to sell it.

I'm not sure I feel the same way you do about the square body s-10s, just a personal taste thing I guess. But I'm not sure that you could ever get your investment back on one. take for example your "sex on wheels" that guy is trying to unlod it as a roller for $7000 and is willing to take less. I'd bet he has $10k in the chassis (minus engine and trans) I say go with a Fox Body Mustang, or a 70's to Early 80's Camaro or Firebird...something that will appreciate in value and collectability.

I appreciate what you are saying Randall, but for me the S-10 won't be an investment. I am looking for that feeling of driving my old truck again and finally getting to do the things I dreamed of to it.

Update:

Received my new seals (12 in all) and replaced them all without any trouble. Now I'm really hoping that my carb issues are fixed and I can put the bike back together this evening.

Ok, did a leak check for 30 minutes. Found a very small, unrelated leak that is very simple to fix and is probably only a result of me not being thorough enough. That will be fixed in the morning and then I will begin the, gulp, reassembly. Putting the carbs back on the bike is the worst part of the entire job. However, when I get that done, I will put it back for sale and hope for the best. Last time I checked, the black S-10 in Ft. Worth is still available.

BMRbrnSNRbrd
08-25-2012, 05:05 PM
Well the black s10 sold...less pressure to hurry on the bike now.

Have you had anymore bites on the bike?

Have you had anymore bites on the bike?

No, but that is because I took it off of CL until it is 100% ride-able again.

Update:

I re-installed the carbs yesterday as well as enough of the overall assembly to start and run the bike. I filled the fuel tank to about 3/4 full, set it on reserve, and after a little bit of trying (I'm assuming because the carbs were dry) the bike fired right up. I let it sit and run for about five minutes and I no longer APPEAR to have a fuel leak. I capitalize the word "appear" because I am very reluctant to say anything is "fixed" on this bike as it seems to take that as a challenge. I am going to replace the fuel line from the tank petcock to the auto petcock as it appears fatigued and the last thing I need is another leaking part. I ordered it from CCP this morning so hopefully I'll be on the road again this week some time.

On a side note...I was so nervous putting fuel to the carbs for the first time that my hands were literally shaking. I think it was the fear of what I may do to the bike if it began to leak again.
