Strange...of you have the U-shaped stiker the bolt you screwed into the door should have worked. You shut your door against that bolt like you would normaly and the latch engages the bolt and wraps around it just like it would the striker. That's how mine works.
The bolt doesn't pop out of the latch. Believe me I tried.
And with the latch engaged you can lock it for more security.
