What are you changing to?
I'm painting all the silver pieces. Most people do a simple color match to the truck, which I will have also, but I'm doing a little more for a custom look.
Those pieces that need to be initially taped off are done...

Nice.....I've been wanting to do this for a while...can't wait to see how it turns out!
what are you spraying them with?
Sanded and primered:

Well fellas, I'm starting over...completely. The clear I used ended up being complete shit. I've had success with it in the past but not this time. When I wetsanded it cut through almost immediately with no effort and 2000 grit paper...I'm pissed.
Oh well, I'm going to just set it aside, leave it alone for a couple days, drive the truck even though it looks like it was broken into, and just go back with a clear head and MUCH better clear. Sorry for the delay. |
Damn Dave.. Sorry to hear that bud.. That blows. I am thinking about doing this as well so I'm waiting for your write up to be complete lol.
Like you said, come back with a clear head and it will be all good. |
A clear head and a $25 can of clear.
the "good" clear tho.....
yup!
:D Hell, I laughed one night - my painter ran out of clear, had a can of that at the house. So, he used it on a set of tails. He asked me if I could tell. I couldn't. Now - he cut and buffed the tails - but they looked IDENTICAL to the paint gun clear. Funny shit? He said it was a little harder to buff. So, David - watch out - its a HARD clear. But, I never buffed it on the lights I did. not much orange peel here - and we'll just say I'm not that good of a painter. http://retroshop.us/4th%20Gen%20Quad...s/DSC09250.jpg |
Got the good clear in today!!! Everything is done on the parts except for clear...what a hell of a project but it was just a lesson I needed to learn and it will be well worth it in the end.
Awesome man glad to hear its working out. Maybe I'll be able to see it finished Saturday?
Should be done tomorrow...I was going to ride out but I think I'll drive instead and bring the kiddo.
Sounds good man. See you Saturday
I am anxious to see the finished product Dave.
Well guys, it was coming along so well and now I have another speedbump...I'm embarrassed by having another problem, but I'm not even sure what caused it.
All of these pieces were painted with the same products from start to finish and all of them (including the VR lid and two-piece badge) were cleared at the same time and only one piece has a major flaw. Here are the good dash pieces: http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...6-08122716.jpg They really look good for not having been buffed and polished at all. However, the main center stack piece that everyone will see the second they get in looks terrible: http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...6-08122808.jpg http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...6-08122759.jpg http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...6-08122851.jpg There is one large spot and a couple small ones where the clear wrinkled for some reason. I didn't spray this one any differently than the other pieces. I went light on the first couple of coats and heavier on the last and waited the same amount of time each time. I don't think it can be fixed without starting over AGAIN. The thing that really sucks is that I'm out of the good 2k clear, so I'm very irritated right now. I'll try to very lightly wetsand that area and buff, but I'm almost positive it can't be fixed. |
Damn dude........ What's that plan now?
I'm doing that one piece over again....again, lol.
I have already rescuffed and resprayed the black sections. Today I'll pick up some more paint and some clear and spray the gray when I get home...give it a couple days in the house to really cure, and then spray the clear. |
good luck buddy!
This right here.......is why I don't paint anymore. I couldn't deal with the finickiness of the fucking paint. |
I was taking my time before, but I'm really going to take my time and give the paint a couple days inside the house to cure and then clear...give that a couple days, and then buff and install.
That sucks! So, have you been driving around with no A/C controls?
Good luck... Hope it'll come out right this time

All you can do is wait for it to dry and sand everything off and start over. Use thin coats and let dry thoroughly before recoating and clearing. I'd recommend a week or so before clearing. |

I was hoping you rigged something up. I'm a spoiled bitch and have to have my A/C.

That looks good. I did mine two weekends ago and I actually used engine enamel with ceramic. I used it because it's pretty thick. I would have trouble with it dimpling up. I had to wait 3hrs before it was dry enough to sand. Once sanded, it went on easy. I feel ya I had to redo some pieces twice. Also did my exhaust tips black.
Nice dude.
Damn I need to do something with my interior....
I feel better now....can finally sleep knowing it's finished! LOL HAHA.
I need to decide on some colors and interior ideas for mine now!!! |
