Well I got tired of the ol six banger blowing out all of its oil. Checked the compression and not one cylinder was over 70 psi and I had one was down to 30 on a wet test.

so...

Drop a Hemi in there!

I got a hole it the water to throw money into also.

No Hemi, that would be cool but I'd end up breaking too much shit, axles and what-not!

My wife is just barely tolerating this little endeavor, I'm not gonna push it.

I saw your post on FB a few days ago about pulling the motor. That's gonna be a nice change when you get done!

Engine came out yesterday and is at Buddy Rice Pro Engine Shop.
Radiator is at A1 here in Edmond to get worked over.
My HEI came in yesterday and my new flex-plate should be here today or Monday.

Time to put together the list of misc. parts for the install.

Everything should be ready in about two weeks...WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!

The machine shop got the engine pulled apart so I stopped in today to take a look, the guy working on told me my engine was running on borrowed time and then pointed at the piston rings most looked like half moons...no wonder i had low compression. He also said the timing chain was so loose he took it off without pulling the gear.

Had I not decided to pull the engine, I would have been looking for a new block and head in very short order!

Engine goes back together early next week!

Last week I took Thursday and Friday off from work to devote to reinstalling the engine. Well as I was headed to the machine shop to get the engine I get a call that I am needed back in the office...SHIT!

So I pick up the engine (Hell yea, I've got priorities) and then head over to the office and work until about 12:30.

I had the engine between the frame rails by 3:30 working all by myself. By Late Friday evening I had just about everything bolted back together except the wiring, radiator, trans cooler, AC condenser and the Front Grill.

Saturday morning, I get up and take the kiddo to her soccer game then after that I head right back to work on the jeep. I start fiddling with the wiring--it is a huge mess! I get enough of it worked out to hook up the starter. I decide to give it a test bump---CLICK BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, WTF! try again, Click BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Damn starter wont engage. I remove the inspection plate and use a screwdriver to short across the starter terminals and it is very clear that the starter gear and the ring gear aren't even in the same zip code.

I start comparing the old flexplate with the new one and sure enough the new ring gear is welded about 3/8ths of an inch further back. I guess I should have compared them more closely before installing the new one. I do a little research and find that they used two different flexplates in 1988. I purchased the one that fit just about every jeep/amc and international engine made between 1976 and 1990, turns out that I need the flexplate that was used between June 1988 and February 1989--JEEZUS

So Saturday afternoon I went to the lake and drank a bunch of beer!

Later this week--pull the trans and swap the old flexplate back in! Yeah for me!:favorites68:

It sucks that you have to re-do it but at least when it's done you'll know the ends and outs of your engine.

Good luck with it, hope that'll be the fix

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!

Finally got everything put back together. But it wasn't easy. After pulling the transmission and the incorrect flexplate, I started to clean the old flexplate to put put back in and found that it was cracked at each of the TC bolt holes---SHIT. looked around and par for the course nobody in OKC had one. O'Reilly's got one in the next morning for me. So I spent all day Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday working on it.

Norman's is the third Sat of every month at Marc Heitz Chevrolet. OKC's is the first Sat of every month at a Starbucks up in Edmond.
