I have been trying to find a place to get a short chain that was rated more than my little 5/16" 4700lb chain and wasn't going to cost me a fortune. I was actually able to find a local place that had a large selection and excellent prices. I dropped in and told the guy what I was looking for and he took me into the warehouse and gave me all my options. They have a bunch of sizes from grade 70 to 100. I ended up going to 3/8" grade 100 with grab hooks rated for 8800 lbs. To get closer to the 12k lb rating for the winch would require 1/2" and it's huge and would be tough to work with. I think the 8800lb chain will be plenty. I asked for 8' and he happened to have a 12' piece that he sold me for the price of 8' so he didn't have to cut it. Total amount was only $55!

They also have an assortment of other recovery stuff at good prices. The same 1" shackle that I just paid $22 for, they have for $15. They are great people and I will definitely be using them for all my future rigging needs. Not sure how bad shipping will be on the heavy stuff, but definitely check them out!

First thing I need to do is rip out a tree. It's growing right on my fence line and I want it gone. Plus, it drops little purple berries that seem to get everywhere. Think I will be able to winch it out? It's about 8" at the base...

I think you may be able to. Depends on how the the roots have grown. If all else fails you can dig around the tree some and cut the roots deeper in the ground so the tree comes up easier. Make sure and be careful when winching it out to keep from pulling roots or base if the tree up into the botom of the fence. Good luck!
