Ahhhh, but with a cummins you can do a little hot shotting during the summer or whenever to make a little cash...tell him it's not an investment in a truck, it's an investment in a small business.

besides, the resale on a used diesel is far far better than on a gas powered truck.

DoubleTakeDodge

That's what i've been telling him! He wants me to get an 80s model Chevy shortwide :favorites68:, which don't get me wrong are very nice, but i love dodge rams.

My argument FOR the cummins:
1) 24+ mpg potentially (TWICE what i was getting in my old truck and what the shortwides will get)
2) ext cab instead of single cab (won't have to sell when i have a family)
3) ALOT more towing power (potential money maker)
4) mechanical motor instead of run primarily by computers (no expensive tuners, just bolt on parts)
5) Much better suspension for where i live (in the country down pretty bad roads)
6) this one in particular has been garage kept and well taken care of by an older man who is also the FIRST and ONLY owner of the truck thus far!
7) Resale Value (much higher than a gas shortwide)
8) AND I CAN STAY IN THE ORC (NO EXPLANATION NECESSARY)

His argument AGAINST the cummins:
1) expensive if the injectors or injector pump fail (the one successful argument against a diesel)
2) mechanical, carb'd motor in a chevy shortwide (made irrelevant by my mechanical 12v argument)
3) its a diesel... (he has a bias against diesels with not reason)

DoubleTakeDodge
01-23-2012, 02:45 PM
And its kbb value is nearly 9k... he's only asking 7k... Any ideas on other PRO arguments i can present to hopefully convince him to feel otherwise about the cummins?

ramthis9501
01-23-2012, 02:53 PM
I don't get why anybody would be against getting a diesel! Hopefully you can get him talked into it.

DoubleTakeDodge
01-23-2012, 02:55 PM
I hope i can! and just cost of repair... but fuel cost argument is made irrelevant because my buddy's cummins gets better fuel economy than my moms v6 minivan -_-. And starting it on a cold day, but even that is barely an argument against a diesel!

ramthis9501
01-23-2012, 03:22 PM
My dads mega cab diesel gets better mileage then my single cab gas truck. His truck weighs 8000 pounds... My truck only weighs about 3500. Plus when we get it straight piped later today, it should bump it up at least another 2 mpgs.

DoubleTakeDodge
01-23-2012, 04:08 PM
And thus diesel is the way I should go!!

ramthis9501
01-23-2012, 04:24 PM
Another argument is that you can get a million miles out of that Cummins. Any gas truck will crap out way before that. You could pass the diesel down to your kids one day and it'll still have plenty of life in it.

DoubleTakeDodge
01-23-2012, 05:12 PM

For real. And it'll have enough room in it for a kid and wife at the same time. Enough towing power to pull whatever I need to. Etc. i dont know why a cummins is supposedly a bad idea!?

DoubleTakeDodge
01-23-2012, 05:15 PM
And he isn't selling it because there is somethin wrong with it. He's selling it because he is now the proud owner of a brand new 2012 dodge ram 3500 longhorn edition

MegaCabMan
01-24-2012, 12:07 PM
Work out a cost of ownership comparison and show it to him. figure fuel costs, oil changes etc. Then calculate the average resale estimate after you have owned the vehicle for about 5 years and subtract it from the initial purchase price, divide it by five and add it to the cost for each vehicle (deprecation).

Call your insurance company and get insurance quotes for both vehicles.

Call a tag agency and get the cost of the tag for each.

If you present a well thought out argument showing the pros and cons for each vehicle, I mean have charts and spreadsheets to show him... it will be very hard for him to say no. Dad's love that kind of shit.

And as for the injector argument...I just looked it up and new stock injectors are a whopping $60 bucks each so to replace all six would be about the same as buying a new Holley 600 cfm carb.

BMRbrnSNRbrd
01-24-2012, 01:31 PM
I wouldn't even go with the charts and stuff...that may be a bit overboard but just presenting a well thought out, non-emotional, plan may make him realize you are trying to make a good decision.

DoubleTakeDodge
01-24-2012, 03:41 PM

How's the suspension and drive train in the Cummins? The engine might last a million miles, but the transmission and suspension will not. You could potentially get into a lot of money rebuilding a front end or replacing a transmission...

DoubleTakeDodge
01-24-2012, 06:00 PM
Front end parts are 6 months old and under lifetime warranty. Tranny has not been abused as it has been babied by an older guy since brand new. I also added "starting in cold weather" to the cummins con list. And I had to be sure to include the ORC in my argument!

myoung84
01-24-2012, 06:06 PM
I don't think starting in cold weather is a big deal. A simple block heater plugged into a timer would solve that problem.

Good to know on the front end parts. How many miles are on the truck? Babied or not, the trans is not going to last nearly as long as the engine...

DoubleTakeDodge
01-24-2012, 06:09 PM
Block heater is good while at home, the problem is while at college with no access to a plug in while parked. But it's very manageable. It has 148,000 miles on it. A suncoast or bullydog transmission build up with shift kit is my first big project idea for the truck though.

myoung84
01-24-2012, 06:11 PM
I think as long as you have a plan to give the tans some attention, then it sounds like a solid deal to me!

Dude 148000 miles is nothing!

Especially on a Cummins. The transmission is something to watch, but even my buddy has 263,000 miles on a factory transmission. And I don't drive nearly as hard as I used to.

Just present that with a "man to man" attitude. Don't act like a dick but don't act like a child talking to"daddy." The name of this game is maturity, which is what your dad will respect.

BTW, add severe weather,i.e. snow, ice, flood, to the pro diesel and even more con shortwide.

Yeah, I dont plan on being a brat about it. I know my place and will be respecful about it. But its also irritating... When my brother wanted a 4x4 Hemi, he was given the chance to get one (despite that being strictly off limits for me). And then traded for a Jeep despite my parents not wanting him to, but they still signed it over.

Yeah, a really good rebuild with billet components can exceed $2000 without much trouble. My buddy Bradley has a 2006 ram 2500 w/ the 5.9L HO and LOTS of goodies added on and is currently on his 5th tranny (4th replacement) and finally decided it was worth going with a bullydog 1000hp tranny w/ a two step. Very pricey but virtually indestructible

2003 Hemi, 110k miles, 24's, HID Headlights, LED Taillights, Blue Underbody Neon, three 15" subs running on three amps, remote start, and alarm.

My parents saw the spreadsheet as a way of "trying to prove them wrong" and "defying their authority." All I did was e-mail the spreadsheet with a message that read "please consider the following information before ruling the cummins out entirely"

Wow, very sorry it didn't work out for you. As a dad of a teenager I encourage her to think for herself and come to me with facts to support her position. BUT if I say no, then the answer is no, period. Often she seems to think that no means maybe and that she just needs to debate her facts better...this is when I feel that she is defying my authority.

Stay humble...it will all work out.

Especially on a Cummins. The transmission is something to watch, but even my buddy has 263,000 miles on a factory transmission. And I don't drive nearly as hard as I used to.

But you still drive pretty damn hard!! Hahahaha

Well the insurance company just offered me $6300 minus the 500 dollar deductable for my truck. Not a chance in this world I'm agreeing to that amount. It's ridiculous how much they'll low ball you. They only wanna pay $5800 for a truck that I've had full coverage on for four years and could have EASILY sold it for $10k+. Pullin stuff like that ain't gonna fly just because I'm a 19 year old kid. Even the kbb value is $8360 and the nada value is $9100. So I may be without a vehicle a little longer than i'd hoped but I refuse to be takin advantage of to the point that I only receive HALF the value of a truck on FULL coverage.

KBB and NADA mean absolutely nothing these days. Good luck with the insurance company, they will be almost impossible to fight...

That would be a good settlement if they let you keep it. You could make a lot back by parting it out...

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. But I'm not going to settle for that little without keeping the truck, I may be a kid but that doesn't make me an idiot.

kid or not and how long and how much you've paid for insurance means very little they have a computerized system that pays out what they think it's worth ...

so if kbb and nada value the truck 8300-9100 how would you sell it for 10k plus? .. i haven't seen many vehicles in the past few years sell for more than what they list i myself have paid less and gotten less than nada on every vehicle i have bought or sold

what is your year/mileage/engine/package? 10k seems awfully high ... my buddy is selling his single cab hemi 04 for 5500

Another example. My 2010 stickered for 38k, I paid around 29k for it. 2 years and 49k miles later, blue book trade in excellent condition was 21.5k. I got 18k for it... Value dropped 50% of sticker in 2 years...

so if kbb and nada value the truck 8300-9100 how would you sell it for 10k plus?

I have had two offers for the truck at $10,500 and $10,200 since June. I had no intentions of letting the truck go so i didn't take the offers as i have much more than that invested. It takes a little longer but if you can find someone who really likes everything you've done to the truck in the aftermarket field you can also get them to pay aftermarket value for many of the parts so that they don't have to pay for and install the parts on a different vehicle. Also, not letting the one-of-a-kind hood go with the truck without an extra thousand on top helps. I may only be able to get that much bone stock but I do know for a fact I could have gotten $10k.

Yeah, depreciation is really sucks. But it affects newer vehicles much more and quickly than one that's a little older. Also to get more it helps if you're willing to wait to sell.

My family does have a fair amount of experience fighting the insurance company and i also have a friend who fought for a couple months and wound up getting nearly double their original offer. I'm not trying to push it to that extreme where i'm getting alot more than I should.

So i just found another truck i'm going to look at next weekend. The guy is out of town all week and the truck will be there for sure with no chance of him selling it before i get to see it either :). It's an '02 sport 4x4 with the 360ci motor. Remote start, alarm, hard cover, brand new tires, infinity audio system, block heater and trailer brake controller. Only 89,700 miles too!
