I am starting this thread to document my Power Wagon build. I will keep this thread up to date with all my mods rather than have numerous separate threads. To get started, here is what it looked like the day I drove it home. I swapped out my HID projector lights from my old truck at the dealer, as well as my short antenna.

Here are the added options on the truck from the window sticker:

Power Premium Cloth Bench Seat
Luxury Group
Technology Group
Power Sunroof
Remote Start
Security Alarm
Power Adjustable Pedals
Spray in Bedliner
Trailer Tow Mirrors
Engine Block Heater (Not sure why this was added on a truck in Dallas...)

Here are pics of the projector headlights from the old truck and a pic of how I attached the winch hook. Also, a pic of my Husky WeatherBeater floor mats taken from the old truck as well. The mud is from my first offroad trip. Nothing special, just an old muddy dirt road. Got to put it in 4L and try out the lockers. I was able to lock the rear after a minute but the front never would lock. I will have to play with it later. I also installed my Bestop PowerBoards yesterday from the old truck. I won't be doing any hard core offroading so I shouldn't bash these up. The frame rails also hand a little lower than the steps when folded up so they should be fine.

Got the exhaust done and the windows tinted yesterday. Went with a Magnaflow 14" muffler with 3" I/O and dumped it after the rear axle. It sounds awesome but not obnoxious in the cab. Window tint is 15% on the two front windows and a 5% strip on the windshield.

I have also ordered a RollBak retractable bed cover that should be here this week as well as bed lighting like I had on the old truck. The Pioneer stereo and Alpine Amp and 10" sub from the old truck will also be going in soon.

And just for fun, here is my rendering of what I eventually want it to look like. I had planned to remove the red stripe, but I actually like it now that I have seen it in person...

Awesome bud. The only thing I disagree with on the rendering are the black headlights...they look too out of line with the other black on the truck. I like that it has black below a body line and white above (except for the grill, of course.)

myoung84
01-03-2012, 02:08 PM
Should I try white you think? I am also thinking of plati-dipping the entire grille shell in white and see how that looks. Then maybe do the white storm trooper lights...

I will be getting a few cans of PD soon and doing the bumpers and wheels...

Billet Technologies oil catch can has been installed. This was removed from the old truck, just had to get some new hose since the original hose was left on the old truck...

Not a bad idea! I drove up the hill by Los Cabos the other day just to try out the 4wd. That would be a good place for some pics too. There was a stock jeep wrangler that was going to follow me but chickened out. There are some pretty big ruts down that road!

You get your truck back yet or you still driving that jeep thing?

Yep, met me the other night to pick up my superchips. Its one of the things I will miss the most...

Haha, yeah I saw it in person. It is HUGE!

Unfortunately, I still have the POS Jeep thing. They have the bubble in the clear coat fixed and I WAS going to have them repaint the door that got keyed and they said they'd do it for $850, and that's ONE DOOR! I said they could blow that up their ass. Then the guy called back and said the other paint and body shop they outsource through would do it all for 350... Sorry to hijack your thread, just venting... Lol.

WOW! I dropped mine off with an appointment and it wasn't touch for a couple days... but, since I'm gone mon-fri. It doesn't effect me really anyway. They could have at least put cruise control in these damn things! That's makes the strip between OKC and TUL a long one...

I tried some plasti-dipping this weekend and it was a big fail. I taped everything off and sprayed the rear bumper and when I removed the tape it pulled the edges of the plastidip off. I must say that a plastidipped bumper looks better in pictures than it does in person...

I am now thinking to having them powder coated... They have gloss black and semi-gloss black options and I have gotten quotes for around $200 for both.

ramthis9501

Yeah painting the bumpers would be a better choice. What about powder coating them? That might look pretty good.

Got the stereo installed this weekend. This was all removed from the old truck. Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD headunit, Alpine MRP-M500 mono amp, Alpine Type R 10" sub, and backup camera.

Overall, I am pleased with the sound, for now. It needs new speakers throughout but for now it will work. The stock Alpine system sounds better with a new headunit than it did stock, but it's not what I would consider "great" sounding. Also, I am getting an annoying speaker pop on startup every once in a while. (maybe 1 in 5 times?). I will eventually fix that by replacing the 6 main speakers and adding my 4 channel Alpine amp that I already have. Biggest hurdle will be deciding what to do with the other 3 speakers (center dash and rear headliner speakers). The center will most likely be scrapped and the rear headliner speakers will either be driven off the headunit or possibly scrapped as well...

This is why I didn't want the Alpine "upgrade", if you can call it that. But, you are forced to get the technology group to get the sunroof... All it is to me is an Alpine badge on the dash, which will eventually all be replaced with "real" Alpine equipment.

Also, you need a painted tailgate handle.

My work Cummins has the tire load button too.................... I have no idea what the hell it is..

When you push it it starts dinging and shit so I turned it back on.

myoung84
01-09-2012, 09:10 PM
Its for running lower tire pressures. I have no need to run 60+ lbs since I'm not haulng anything. I am running about 45-50 lbs and pushing the light load button keeps the TPMS from freaking out for pressure too low.

And a white tailgate handle would be nice! I might do that when I paint my lights...

BMRbrnSNRbrd

myoung84
01-09-2012, 11:28 PM
Thanks for the compliments guys!

I don't think I really want to get into handle painting on this truck. It's supposed to be "rugged" looking and I think the black handles add to that. I want to keep the exterior simple. Going to powder coat the bumpers gloss black to match the lower 2-tone and eventually get a grille custom painted. For now, the grille will get plasti-dipped in white. I just got an email about the white plasti-dip I ordered, it appears that the clear was on back order but they will have more tomorrow. They are even throwing in a free can for my troubles, so I'll have 3 cans of white!

Called them yesterday and they were supposed to call me back with a quote but never did. I just called again and left a message. Broken Arrow powder coating quoted me $250 and another little shop quoted $125 if I had them sand blasted myself. I don't really want to mess with that, I want to drop them off as-is and pick them up completed.

Still can't get the Tulsa Powder Coating guys to give me a call back. I guess they are making more money than they need and don't need my business. Unless the price is way cheaper than BA power coating I'm not going to use them.

How well is the powder coating going to hold up on the bumpers? I would imagine it would be better than the chrome, but not as good as something like line-x. The chrome on this truck is pretty shitty from the factory. If I wasn't going to get them coated, I would push for a new rear bumper...

BMRbrnSNRbrd

Got the bed cover installed last night. It's the RollBak model from Bak, same company that makes the BakFlip. Overall it seems to be well built and the install wasn't too bad, despite the horrible instructions. It's spring loaded so once you release the locks it will automatically retract into the canister. It comes with a few sets of adjustable stops that you can mount anywhere on the rails. One set is already installed and you just have to screw it to the rails, the others are shipped loose and I didn't install them. I have it set so I can open it about 18" but if you need to stop the cover in other increments it's fully adjustable. For me fully closed, slightly open and fully open will be fine.

I would have gone with the BakFlip G2 again, but I haul my 4 wheeler in the bed a lot and I didn't like losing my rear window with the cover up against the glass, especially when pulling the boat. You do lose about a 8-12"of bed space, but since this bed is 8" longer than the last one it will be fine for me. Also, you lose about 6" of bed space with the BakFlip when folded up against the glass, so not a huge difference. There's also some space below the canister that will be good for small toolboxes and a floor jack.

It looks to have about the same water tightness as the BakFlip (which was about 95%) with most of the water coming in around the tailgate gaps. For my needs, this cover suits me very well.

Can they paint over the fake plastic chrome? I can probably swing the paint but can't buy a new primered grille right now. Just spent almost $1500 at the tag office today!

I imagine they could do it. I painted mine with a rattle can and it came out decent, so I imagine the paint guy could make it look good with the right stuff.

I also got a start on my recovery gear.

ARB Recovery Bag
ARB 26.5k Lb 9' Tree Strap
(2) ARB 3/4" Shackles
(2) 24" 10k Lb Axle Straps
Rugged Ridge 30k Lb Snatch Block
Receiver Hitch 3/4" Shackle

I also threw in the chain I had from ripping up bushes a couple years ago. Rated for 4700 Lbs, so good enough for some light duty stuff.

So now I have a real Alpine system. I replaced the door speakers with Alpine Type S 6x9's and the left and right dash speakers with some 3.5" Kickers (Since Alpine doesn't have 3.5's). I installed my Alpine 4 channel amp from the old truck to power the 4 door speakers. The dash speakers and the rear headliner speakers are powered from the head unit.

I was actually shocked to see the the 4 door speakers had plastic cones instead of paper, but they still felt pretty cheap and had no tweeters. The dash speakers were still cheap paper speakers. The new Type S 6x9's were a direct drop in and required no trimming behind the door like my the Infinity's I put in the old truck. I connected the new speakers to the factory speaker wires since I didn't want to run new wires to each of the doors.

When I bought the new speakers I also bought 25' of 9 conductor "speed wire" which made wiring so much easier. I ran this single cable from the new amp behind the rear driver seat up over the top of the doors above the headliner to below the steering wheel where the factory amp is located. I unplugged the 2 connectors, cut the speakers from the harness and soldered them to the new cable going to the new amp. Did the same thing with the left over cable for the dash and headliner speakers running this cable to the head unit. The center dash speaker is no longer used, along with the factory amp. It now sounds so much better than before.

Sorry, no pics of this mod since there wasn't really much to see.

Awesome. How did you get it to sit so level?

IDK... Just some jiggling until it sat flat on the radiator. I also lifted the intake out of the TB hose a little to make it a bit taller. That seemed to help as well.

myoung84
02-01-2012, 10:30 AM
Here are all the pics. I went with the standard textured lid since I'm not going to be painting it. Installation wasn't too bad. One mod I had to make to the intake was flipping the bolts that held the lower lip on. The threads were digging into the A/C condenser. Once I flipped them I put some 3M tape over the heads just in case, but they don't contact the condenser anymore. I was also worried about it not sealing against the hood since the 2500 hoods are taller, but it seals up all the way around. I also tucked the wire loom behind the intake so it didn't disrupt airflow. And finally, I moved the relay that was attached to the horn over to the side to get it out of the way. Not sure what it's for...

Overall I am happy with it. Like others have said it's a little flimsy when the hood is opened, but once it's closed it's fine. Drove a couple miles last night to pick up dinner and honestly didn't notice anything, but I didn't unhook the battery and only drove about 3 miles so the computer hasn't had a chance to re-learn anything. I'll get it out on the highway this weekend and see what it will do...

I might black out the headlights instead of my original storm trooper idea? Decisions, decisions...

Thanks for all the complaints! I fuckin love this truck! I have always wanted one and finally gave in! Aside from the lower gas mileage, it's not too bad.

And I got plenty of time to decide on white vs. black. As already mentioned, both are way better than the chrome. All I really have left is plasti-dipping the wheels black. I know I can't say the truck will be "done" at that point, but there won't be too many more big mods for a while...

Here's the pics of my new OEM switch panel. AUX 1 & 2 will go to future front mount lights, AUX 3 will activate a front mounted camera, and AUX 4 goes to my locker bypass. The two relays mounted on the right are for AUX 3 & 4. The grounds from AUX 1 & 2 run directly under the hood to trigger the relays for the lights. I originally had relays hooked up for these as well, but didn't see the need to have multiple relays on the same circuit.

I have the front camera relay partially wired and will complete it when I have time to actually mount a camera. I have it wired so that with the button off the reverse trigger goes through the normally closed contacts and will operate like normal when I put the truck in revers. When the button is switched on, it sends 12V to the head unit so it thinks the truck's in reverse and automatically switches to the camera input. I plan on running both front and rear camera video cables through a splitter to the single camera input. Only one camera will be powered at a time so there shouldn't be any issues. To do this, I'll have to install another relay triggered off the AUX 3 button to power the front camera, and the rear camera is already powered from the reverse lights.

The only thing that is currently hooked up and functional is the locker bypass. I went ahead and hard-wired the bypass because I was tired of waiting on a bypass harness to become available. Everything was soldered and wrapped in wire loom and the loom passes through a rubber grommet on the floor. It looks factory and I highly doubt any dealer will ever know it's been modified. The bypass works perfect, I just hit the button, and truck thinks it's in 4LO and I am able to lock the lockers in either 2HI or 4HI. I can also disconnect the sway bar in 2HI if needed. The lockers are still very sporadic. Sometimes the rear will lock within a couple feet but more often than not, it takes forever to get it to lock. I'll keep playing with these and see if it improves...

I would do it if I could ever get a few minutes to myself... The minute I start doing something to the truck (like wiring stuff) The phone rings or someone starts talking to me and then i get all pissed and give up..

after I did my remote start and alarm on the 08 I was like piss on this wiring stuff.. lol

myoung84
02-20-2012, 04:37 PM
This is much easier than installing a remote start. hardest part is running the wires under the hood, which isn't too bad.

Did you drill a hole and feed it through firewall? I know the 08's had a pre cut hole in the firewall don't know how the 4th gen stuff works yet.

myoung84
02-20-2012, 04:46 PM
Yes, there's a plate where the clutch pedal would go. You can remove the plate easily with 2 nuts from the inside of the cab (15mm I think) and drill the holes. You may have to whack the plate a couple times since it's sealed against the fire wall pretty good, but it does come off. I have 2 holes in mine, one for my 4 gauge wire to my amps and one for the 2 ground wires for my lights.

Here are the rest of the pics of my new Randy Ellis Design light bar. The lights are Hella 500FF with the outside being fog lights and the inside being driving lights. All wiring was soldered and wrapped in wire loom for a factory look. The are controlled from 2 separate switches from my switch panel.

I always seem to get pulled over for stupid s*&^ like that. I have observed Jeeps and others without covers.

Edit: just pulled up state stautes regarding auxillary lighting. Can be uncovered but only 4 lights can be on at a time, not counting parking lamps.
Max hieght from ground to lamp center is 42 inches.

Do they have to be full covers or do gravel guards count??

They don't have to be covered at all based on my source. I should mention I didn't download the entire vehicle code, rather I got this info from a summary source http://liftlaws.com/oklahoma_lift_laws.htm

100 watt bulbs are illegal for street use. Thats a federal DOT ruling. But like 6200kv bulbs, people tempt fate by using them. That's why your boxes always say "for off road use only".
Personaly, I would not want to tempt a discussion with any officer over whether my lights are legal to run or not. Maybe I'll get some KC guards.
Apology offered for the thread jack.

I remembered that I had a label maker at work and had an idea to label my buttons. I tried the white labels with black font first and it didn't look good, so I ordered some labels that were black with white font and went at it. Yes, some are a little crooked, but I will reprint and fix it later. I think this is better than AUX 1-4. I might want to remove the locker bypass sticker before taking it to the dealer though...
